Conwy. Conwy Castle was built on solid rock on the orders of Edward I between 1283 and 1289, and its walls now surround the modern town. Without doubt one of the finest castles in Edward's Welsh 'ring of steel'. Like Beaumaris Castle on Anglesey, and Harlech Castle it was designed by the master architect James of St George. Now under the care of CADW - Welsh Historic Monuments. Listed in UNESCO world heritage list as a site of outstanding universal value. Thomas Telford later built a road over the water supported by a suspension bridge which blends in beautifully with the Castle, and is of the same design as the bridge at Menai Bridge on Anglesey. To facilitate the Chester to Holyhead Railway a tubular bridge was designed and built by the engineer Robert Stephenson, who had also designed the tubular railway bridge over the Menai Straits to Anglesey. Its supports interlink with the Castle and are an amazing engineering feat. We present here photographs both old and new. Please do enjoy them.
