Tonypandy and Penygraig

Probably the best known of all the Rhondda's towns is Tonypandy. Any visit to the Rhondda would be incomplete without a visit to the scene of the Tonypandy Riots (more about that when time permits). The town is associated with the late speaker of the House of Commons -  and gentleman, George Thomas - Viscount Tonypandy. Born Thomas George Thomas in Port Talbot in 1909, he was in fact brought up in Trealaw. Viscount Tonypandy died in 1997.

The photos of the White Rock Hotel in Penygraig are of the webmaster's great grandfather - Edward Evans.

Reference the photo above of St Illtyd's Church Choir 1931, Marj has written in to identify some of the people in the photo. Next but one to the vicar (moving l to r) the big man is Frederick Carpenter - her grandfather. Next is L. Powell - Tenor, next is Elizabeth Carpenter (Soprano) - wife of Frederick, next is G. Thorn - Baritone. They were the artists. In the back row the very tall man is Hendry Carpenter. Moving left to right, the next is George Carpenter, next but one is Clarence Carpenter - still resident in Williamstown. Next aged about 15 is Haydn Carpenter - Marj's dad.

The people highlighted are family of this webmaster and also of Jan Fehribach of the United States - born Howells in Penygraig.

This fine photograph was taken circa 1915, probably at the family home of the Palmers of 15, Wyndham Street, Penygraig.
