Colwyn Bay Welsh Mountain Zoo, Chimpanzee aloft The Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay, North Wales, was opened in 1963 - the brainchild and dream of the zoo's founder - Bob Jackson. After many transformations over the ensuing years it became the National Zoo of Wales in 2008. I have visited the zoo on several occasions, and I have to say it has improved time upon time. Because of the zoo's location on a mountain side above Colwyn Bay, it is not the easiest place to get around if you are not fairly fit. For families and those who are reasonably mobile, it is however a great day out.
