Rhondda
Valleys Information and History Elwyn Thomas - Rhondda Valleys Artist. Maerdy Colliery Pithead. For many years Elwyn Thomas was Head of Art at Ferndale Grammar School, but he only really began painting following his retirement from full time teaching at Ferndale Comprehensive in July 1987. Working mostly through the medium of acrylic, Elwyn will however also paint in water colours and mixed media. Elwyn was born in Tylorstown in the Rhondda Valleys on January 22nd 1932, and in 1999 he moved to Trealaw. I was introduced to his work by his friend Gerald Owen, and instantly became a great fan of Elwyn's work. To me his work truly captures the spirit and the life of the Rhondda Valleys. I would like to thank him for sharing his work with us through the images on this website.
He has exhibited with "Pictures for Schools" on numerous occasions
(This is organised through the Glamorgan Education Authority with The
National Museum of Wales). The Rhondda Heritage Park on a few occasions. The Washington Gallery, Penarth.. and the Albany Gallery - Christmas Show. Click on the the images to see in high resolution:-
