Plas Glynllifon Estate is the ancestral home of the Glynne and Wynn(e) family, who trace their ancestry back to a possibly mythical character named Cilmyn Troed Ddu, who supposedly settled near to the River Llifon in the 9th century. The estate boasts one of only three grade one listed gardens in the county of Gwynedd in North Wales.

The present mansion was built by Lord Newborough in the 1830's and 1840's, but the whole estate is now in the ownership of Gwynedd County Council. At just £4 entrance for an adult it is a cheap day out for the family.

A wonderful place to visit, a delightful place to roam and walk around - eight miles of paths in all - taking in the many rare species of trees and plants, many planted over one hundred and fifty years ago.

A dominant feature of the park is water, and it includes cascading terraced waterfalls, and the remains of a water mill that once powered the saw mills on the estate. The late, great Fred Dibnah was responsible for restoring the steam engine that is on display.

There are rare species of bat, the lesser-horseshoe bat, and water domiciled creatures like otters - and many others - that have shared the living of this estate alongside the humans that once lived here.

There is so much to see and do here, including many things for children, and there are picnic areas, and even a cafe for a cold drink or a hot meal. I really do rate Plas Glynllifon as a must see on any visit to North Wales.

I have done a separate page for the Water Mill here.
