Penysarn War Memorials

Anglesey, Penysarn War Memorial and Railings in HDR

Penysarn is in a rural location on the Island of Anglesey in North Wales. The War Memorial is set back a little from the main road, and clearly visible by all passing.

On the WWII Memorial plaque above, is John Owen Roberts of Cerrigwinilan Bach, Penysarn. He was aged 24 and the son of Owen and Maggie Roberts. John was an Able Seaman on the merchant steamboat ‘Monmouth Coast’ when she was sunk off Ireland by a torpedo fired from the U-Boat U-1305 on 24th April 1945. John was one of three Anglesey men to perish on the ship, which lost 16 of the 17 crew onboard. The only survivor was Derek Cragg, a mess room boy, who was picked up by an Irish fishing boat. The other two Anglesey casualties were Joseph Stanley Jones – Chief Officer – of Bull Bay, the son of Owen and Catherine Jones, and Benjamin Davies – Second Officer – of Llanddona, son of David and Ellen Davies.
